Introducing The Junction’s Public Art Project
The redevelopment of The Junction has given momentum to an ambitious project which will bring a major pubic artwork to the venue.
This groundbreaking large scale work of public art will be unveiled at the opening of new and refurbished spaces at The Junction in spring 2004.
The Junction has the commitment of seven internationally acclaimed artists who will submit their ideas for an artwork this autumn. You will be able to view these when they are presented in an interactive virtual exhibition gallery at this address between September and October 2003.
The Brief
The Junction’s brief requires short-listed artists to propose a bold and innovative artwork reflecting the radical mix of digital, performance arts and youth culture for which The Junction is renowned. Taking the concept of public art far beyond familiar static sculptures, the commission will integrate new technology in order to create a dynamic and responsive artwork that will actively involve audiences. The result, a hi-tech work rarely seen on this scale, will symbolise the region’s importance as an international centre of innovation and is bound to excite the curiosity of visitors to the region. It will have a life span of at least three years and will be enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people.

Get ready to interact & comment. Simply enter the virtual exhibition gallery. During September and October of 2003 the seven proposed new artworks for The Junction will be presented here. We invite you to champion your favourite idea and feed in your comments. Your input will be studied by the selection panel before they make their final choice. The winning design will be announced in October 2003.
