Initiated in 1994 by the Council of Europe as part of the Programme of Artistic Exchanges, Apollonia is an association governed by local law created in 1998 with the purpose of promoting and reinforcing artistic exchanges, as well as creating a platform for sustainable co-operation between European countries.

Apollonia’s remit is to encourage cultural diversity and plurality in the means of expression among young artists from outlying areas of Europe by making their work more accessible to a wider audience and by increasing awareness among the general public; to further the integration of artists and cultural professionals from distant regions into the Western European networks by facilitating the mobility of artists and their participation in important projects, thereby playing a part in the construction of a European cultural identity.

Apollonia has a network structure which brings together artists, exhibition stewards, art critics, museums and cultural institutions throughout Europe.

The association’s habitual activities include:

-  the organisation of a number of varied events of European scope: touring exhibitions, requiring the active collaboration of various European partners; artist residences; retrospectives; round tables...
-  running the network
-  answering questions and requests from the general public (who contact the association in particular via Internet), but also from artists, both in Eastern and Western Europe, who are looking to develop partnerships and contacts with various European cultural operators.
