To Saint Antoine, La Gare franche has to be the place of all the meetings: in the refreshment room, opened to all and permanently, in the resources center, in the court or in the factory, decline and work the artistic projects. It is alla about crossing the public, diversifying the meetings, fitting out the contacts, contributing, in their way, in the social link.

Implanted in the fifteenth district of Marseille, la Gare franche is at the borderline between Saint Antoine and the Plan d' Aou, in the free zone, between L'Univers du sommeil warehouses, those of le Dock des alcools and the railroad line.

The site, ideal to invent and make artistic adventures, consists of a factory, a house and a ground. Thanks to the support of his partners, the City of Marseille, the Ministry of Culture and the Regional Council, the Cosmos Kolej was able to purchase the site and works on its architectural modification today.

Having asked for asylum theaters for fifteen years, the Cosmos Kolej also opens la Gare franche to the other artistic teams, to France or moreover. He invites and accompanies artists, companies and collectives, in their artistic steps(initiatives), with the theater in the cinema, the plastic arts in the music.

The Company pursues its artistic research and the experiment of new artistic forms.

We are very happy to send on the good news from Z-Bau in Nuremburg, see the press letter from Stephan Grosse-Grollmann and Willi Reichel below!

Dear Madams and Sirs.

The Kulturausschuss (cultural commission) decided today (Friday, 9th July 2010) to reconstruct the Z-Bau, to make it useable as a building and, in the long run, to develop it into a cultural centre for innovative, experimental and sub-cultural forms of expression in the fields of production and events. Now, after long years of waiting, doubting and questioning, a distinct decision was finally taken.

We, as long-standing operators of the Z-Bau cultural centre, appreciate this magnificent decision. It shows that the great feedback of our visitors, particularly during the last 10 weeks, the various users' activities for the preservation of the Z-Bau and the international echo were finally crowned with success.

We are convinced that the Z-Bau still has great potential to develop its role as a place for creativity for many forms of culture and to increase its interregional vibrancy. The first ten years were characterised by pioneering work, developing a lively place of culture out of a casern fraught with political and physical pollutants. Advancing from what has been reached thus far and the potential to grow in substance, staff and space will be the next phase for the Z-Bau cultural centre. The decision of this Friday is one for a creative future of the house. The courage for this will pay off.

We wish to thank all supporters of this decision.

Nuremberg, on the 9th July 2010

Last week Z-Bau (Nürnberg, Germany) were unexpectedly informed that the cultural department of the City of Nürnberg has proposed to close the centre and tear down the building. According to the proposal, one of the main reasons for the planned closure is the current financial situation of the City of Nürnberg.

Z-Bau has put nearly ten years of hard work in the building, which is owned by the City, and turned it into a cultural centre with around 70.000 visitors per year. Thanks to negotiations on regional level, the EU has recently agreed to support renovations of the building with €2.5 million. In spite of this, the head of culture in Nürnberg has now proposed to tear it down. On Friday the 29th of April, the culture commission of the City Council has to decide on the case.

Support actions have already been taken by several Trans Europe Halles members, ARTfactories/Autre(s)pARTs and the french Mission NTA. We have all sent letters to the mayor, the cultural department and the political parties in Nürnberg. At the time of writing, the majority party of the city parliament, SPD-Stadtratsfraktion Nürnberg, holds a meeting on the proposal. Immediate action is of great importance to the Z-Bau team. Please react by expressing your believe in independent culture to those in power!

Please see this letter from Willi Reichel, member of Z-Bau team, explaining the situation.

Description

The opening of the Westergasfabriek Culture Park, septembre 7th, was a huge success! More than 10,000 visitors filled the events field. Coinciding with the annual festival 'Kijk Op De Wijk' meant that there was an abundance of art, culture, music, sport and games activities going on. A procession float was organized, which symbolised the transition of the Centre.
The park is now open, but not everything is quite finished. Work is still being completed on the korfball field, the central axis and the gasholder's foundations.

The cultural use of the Westergasfabriek was long regarded as temporary, an "interim phase" before a permanent function could be found. But it has now become clear that hosting cultural activities is in fact the key to the successful redevelopment of the complex.

Its characteristic buildings and unique surroundings have attracted cultural organizations from beyond the city, and sometimes outside the Netherlands.
A cultural image is an inherent part of our vision for the complex.

But there's more!
The Westergasfabriek is a complex soil decontamination project: pollution has been isolated by means of a covering layer.
It is a remarkable park project: a park worthy of the twenty-first century is to be laid out on top of the new soil layer.
It is a unique architectural restoration project: the factory buildings are all listed as protected monuments and are to be restored to their former glory.
The Westergasfabriek is an excellent example of how a site can be put to good use while awaiting a more permanent designation. It is a project which symbolizes our evolution from the industrial age into the communications era.

Former use : Gasfactory
Surface of the site : 16 hectares
Location : city
Foundation year : 1896, cultural use 1992
Type of occupation : lease
Owner of the building : MAB B.V. (project developer)
