Description

Hangar is a centre for artistic creation located in Barcelona's Poblenou district, occupying a refurbished industrial building covering 1800 m2. Hangar has several functions, but they are all geared towards a single goal: to provide support for new generations of artists, whatever the nature of their work and the tools they use to produce it. Hangar provides three major services to the artistic community: the rental of spaces (studios) at very affordable rates, access to equipment, programmes and qualified technicians specialising in creation using digital technologies, and, lastly, international exchanges and residence schemes for artists. Hangar offer visibility to the artists organizing projects like Show Rooms, All Open, video programs and exhibitions. Hangar was created by and for the artistic community to cater for a number of needs stemming from Barcelona's context and the changes that have taken place in the field of international artistic creation and production. Its beginnings are to be found in the early 1980s, when the Federació Sindical d'Artistes Plàstics de Catalunya (Federated Union of Plastic Artists of Catalonia) (as the AAVC was then known) asked Barcelona City Council for permission to use the old warehouses in the port for artist's workshops. These now house the Catalan History Museum. There were numerous precedents from elsewhere in Europe to support the idea, such as Art Space (London), the Kunstler Bethanien (an old hospital, Berlin), and the Cité des Arts (Paris). These experiences were used to attract the attention of public institutions and make them aware of the problems facing emerging artists in the city, and possible solutions to them. The 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the far-reaching urban transformations it brought have changed the city. Rental and purchase prices of living and working space soared. In line with a very widespread trend in the West, where formerly industrial buildings were being used for cultural purposes, it was in 1994 that the AAVC first raised the issue of the need to solve this problem by opening up disused buildings to artists. And it finally achieved its aims when Hangar was opened on 20 June 1997.

Description

LA MEKANICA is a non-profit professional cultural association, based in Barcelona, that aims to foster the development of contemporary dance and the performing arts in Spain, in an international context. Focusing on contemporary dance and the performing arts, LA MEKANICA sees it as its mission, the reinforcement of networking, international collaboration and intercultural exchange between Spain and the rest of the world.

The main activities of LA MEKANICA are engaged in the programming, support, promotion and research of contemporary dance and the performing arts, by the organization of regular showings, international meetings, research projects, artist-in residence programs, and the production of an intercultural festival in Barcelona, dedicated to contemporary dance and the performing arts. LA MEKANICA is also a new working place for artists in Barcelona : a space for the development of ideas, people and projects.

The association is based in an old industrial ship, in the heart of Barcelona's district Sant Marti, where nowadays the association's office and a studio for rehearsals and residencies is located.

LA MEKANICA also promotes the edition of videos and books around themes related with contemporary dance, performing arts and intercultural practices, with the aim of stimulating contemporary dance criticism and writing in Spain.

On 2004, during several visits to Ramallah (Palestine), LA MEKANICA began a project focused on contemporary dance in the occupied territories of the West Bank. This project, will be released as a video documentary on 2007 and as book on 2008.

Description

The Ateneu Popular of Nou Barris is a cultural centre open to the public, born as a result of neighbourhood residents' struggle to restore the area to public use. The numerous cultural activities that took place over the years helped to shape several specific groups, whose regular events gradually defined the lines of work that characterize the current personality of the Ateneu: circus, theatre, cinema, street animation, music, etc. Additionally, these groups established the foundation of a management model in which decision-making is based on maximum participation and responsibility of all interested parties.

From the beginning, we have considered cultural activities a tool for social transformation. Both the quality of the activities offered and the support from neighbourhood groups that share our cultural philosophy contribute to this process of change and improvement. For this reason, we prioritise certain aspects when programming our activities: creativity, training, production and distribution - all within an organizational framework that promotes participation on all management levels.
