Mobility fund of artists and cultural operators within the African continent

Application Guidelines

Art Moves Africa (AMA) aims to facilitate cultural and artistic exchanges within the African continent. AMA offers travel funds to artists, arts professionals and cultural operators living and working in Africa to travel within and between the five African regions in order to engage in the exchange of information, the enhancement of skills, the development of informal networks and the pursuit of cooperation.

Geographical area of focus: Art Moves Africa supports all artists and cultural operators living and working in Africa for travels within and between the African regions. These regions are

Central Africa: Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo Brazzaville, Congo Kinshasa, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Rwanda, Sao Tomé and Principé East Africa : Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda Southern Africa: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe West Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo North Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia.

Application process:
To request a travel support, applicants must fill in an application form and explain the objectives of their travel. This application form has to be sent by email to ama@yatfund.org. Please do not send any other attachments.

Once every four months, a selection committee reviews and selects the applications. The committee is composed of professionals working in the cultural sector in Africa, with knowledge of diverse artistic fields in the different regions. The applications are evaluated based on their individual merits but referring to established criteria (see below). The applicants are replied to after six weeks of the deadline.

Art Moves Africa supports the costs of travel, visa and travel insurance for the duration of stay. AMA will not support fees, accommodations, or per-diem.
Art Moves Africa supports the travel of artists and cultural professionals working in the following artistic fields:

Art Moves Africa allocates 60 % of its annual travel support to artists and cultural professionals traveling from one region to the other, 40% are made accessible to travel within the same region.

Art Moves Africa encourages participation at any event which enables:

Collaborations with other professionals
Exchange of information and activities
Elaboration of projects, practices and ideas
Improvement of artistic or technical skills
Discovery of different artistic fields through: cultural professional network meetings, festivals, artists' residencies, workshops, seminars, lectures, work sessions ...

Artists to demonstrate the long term effect of their project

Artists to share their experience by encouraging networking in their own country

Professionals seeking wider access to international networks to enhance their careers.

Due to limited funding Art Moves Africa cannot support:
More than one trip per year per person

Travel within the same country

Travel for big productions (rehearsals ...)

Touring of big companies (performances during a festival or a theatre season, touring of shows). Only small scale performances (maximum three people) will be able to apply for travel support

Professionals travelling on behalf of governmental institutions, highly established organisations, or commercial companies

Academic research and training
Fulltime students and amateurs.

Obligations:
If an application has been selected for support, the applicant will be asked to sign a contract with the Fund. After the contract has been signed, the money will be transferred to the applicant's bank account. Stipulated in the contract is an agreement that obliges applicants upon return to the resident country to send receipts of all expenses of their trip to AMA's office and write a short report about the experience. Some of these reports will be placed on AMA's website to present them to a wider audience and showcase personal stories and experiences. Adherence to contract obligations is considered an important criterion when reviewing future applications by individuals who were previously accepted for support.
Art Moves Africa encourages individuals to continue applying even if previously rejected.

As a rule, specified projects should begin at least nine weeks after the announced deadline. Applications which do not observe this rule will be automatically disqualified from the selection process.

ArtMoves Africa (AMA) is an independent non-profit association aiming to facilitate cultural and artistic exchanges within the African continent. AMA offers travel funds to artists, arts professionals and cultural operators living and working in Africa to travel within and between the five African regions in order to engage in the exchange of information, the enhancement of skills, the development of informal networks and the pursuit of cooperation.

Background:

AMA is a project initiated by the Young Arab Theatre Fund (YATF) together with a group of African and Arab organizations to facilitate and encourage the mobility of artists and cultural operators within the African continent. In 2001, YATF participated in meetings in Egypt, Kenya and Zimbabwe, together with different organization and cultural activists from Africa and the Arab world. The meetings aimed at linking organizations and individuals, and creating informal continent-wide networks. The participants agreed that one of the major obstacles for artists and cultural professionals in Africa was the persistent lack of funds specifically allocated to support travel.

Objectives:

Facilitate cultural exchanges in Africa for individual artists and cultural operators, and cultural organizations Encourage artists and cultural operators to exchange experiences, information and ideas towards shared projects and artistic collaborations Give artists and cultural operators the opportunity to gain a better knowledge of the context and the cultural environment in the different regions Encourage independent initiatives and small projects by giving artists and cultural operators the opportunity to meet with their counterparts and partners Give artists and cultural operators the opportunity to attend festivals in order to see each other's work to enrich their own creativity Give artists and cultural operators the opportunity to enhance their artistic or technical skills in participating in highly professional artistic and arts management workshops, seminars and residencies for artists Encourage the mobility of artists and cultural professionals as well as the mobility of information.

* Links between North Africa and neighboring Arabic speaking countries extend beyond shared histories, religion, language and culture. For this reason the Fund believes it vital to include these countries as part of its North Africa regional programming.

Legal Status:

For the first year, AMA will be functioning as one of the programs of the YATF, but with an independent selection committee and coordinator. By the end of 2005 ArtMoves Africa shall be registered as an independent international association in Africa.

Young Arab Theatre Fund - Arab world

Young Arab Theatre Fund, YATF, is a production fund designed to serve independent young Artists directors living and working in the Arab world. The long-term goal of the fund is to encourage the sustainability of independent theatre and performing arts in the Arab World and to motivate its development. YATF is working through different programs: production, touring, travel and events and alternative spaces.

Who can apply ?
Young artists who work professionally in the contemporary performing arts in the Arab countries or have an artistic involvement in the region.

Priorities
professionals at the beginning of their career
artists who have not previously received YATF's support, though this does not exclude the possibility of support for the same company or director twice in succession
artists who explore different artistic disciplines and produce multidisciplinary performances (including theatre, dance, video, installation, music)
artistic quality

Restrictions
Undergraduates and amateurs are not eligible for support.

Which program?

Production
The YATF co-produces projects that fall within the framework of performing arts (theatre, dance, video, installation, music).
Applications for production should be sent at least four months before the premiere/opening.
The YATF cannot support 100% of the total budget of a production.

Touring
The YATF supports the presentation of performing arts productions in different venues and festivals within the Arab World and beyond. Applications for touring should be sent at least six weeks before the presentation.

Travel
The YATF supports :

individual artists to attend festivals, in order to broaden their knowledge, see other performances, make new contacts, etc.
artist residencies
auditions
The YATF cannot support any artist travelling for studies or scholarships.

How to apply ?
Please fill in the application form of the program you wish to apply for and send it by email. The whole application should not be more than 4 pages. You can write in Arabic, English or French. A reply will be sent back to you when we have received your application.
Applications can only be sent by e-mail, fax or mail (preferably by email).

Please send additional materials such as photographs, videos and other documentation that will give the selection committee a clear impression of your work either by e-mail or by post to:

After the deadlines the applications are sent to a selection committee, the YATF will do its best to give you an answer within 5 weeks.

Budget
Please send the total budget, including all sources of income (co-producers, sponsors, and other partners for funding), clearly stating which amounts are confirmed, promised or under negotiation. The YATF supports that staff be paid to standard.

Roberto Cimetta Fund

Geographic focus: Mediterranean (the countries on the north shore from Portugal to Turkey, and on the south side from the Near East to the Maghreb.

The Roberto Cimetta Fund is an international association promoting artistic exchange and the mobility of professionals in the field of contemporary performing arts and visual arts within the Mediterranean area.

Activites :

In collaboration with the European Cultural Foundation, the Roberto Cimetta Fund has set up a programme for awarding individual travel grants. These cover travel and visa costs for trips such as attending professional cultural network meetings, workshops, artist's residences, festival, symposiums etc. The programme is intended to operate simply, flexibly and quickly. Selections are organised regularly (every 5 to 6 weeks).

The Roberto Cimetta Fund organises professional platforms for comparing experience and knowledge on regional artistic issues in the Mediterranean.

Travel Grants for whom :

The travel grant programme is addressed to all professional artists, cultural operators or technicians working in the fields of contemporary performing arts, visual arts or cinema in the Mediterranean (the countries on the north shore from Portugal to Turkey, and on the south side from the Near East to the Maghreb.

European professionals may apply but only if their project has a strong Mediterranean connection.

The Roberto Cimetta Fund travel grants are individual - they are granted to specific individuals and not to organisations. The application must therefore be filled in and sent by the person desiring the grant. We can accept several applications linked to the same project (participants for short term training events, for example), but the selection will be based on the merit of each individual personally : he/she must clearly describe their career path, motivations and personal objectives.

The mobility programme supports travel which is linked to exchange and to forthcoming projects. Travel grants for which type of project?

The trip should facilitate networking, cooperation and exchange between professionals in the arts:

The experience should indirectly contribute to local cultural development.

The project should demonstrate a sense of continuity.

ATTENTION : Travel grants are not available for trips linked to production or touring : the Fund does not finance travel in the framework of the actual production period or travel linked to the touring of work.

ASEF Cultural Exchange

Artists in Progress | Creative Process | Cultural Dialogue in Context

The ASEF Cultural Exchange (CE) Department seeks to provide Young Artists and Cultural Professionals a unique environment and meeting point for dialogue that has the potential to evolve into positive artistic interventions, dynamic cultural networks and cultural policy development between Asia and Europe.

CE works in close cooperation with public and private art and cultural organisations, groups and networks. These stakeholders are specifically chosen due to their potential to lead social opinions against prejudices and stereotypes, as well as the role of multiplier that they play.

CE programmes and related events thus have the following objectives:

1. To initiate, promote and reinforce Asia-Europe cultural networks as key structures for the development of sustainable links, notably through online cultural platforms

2. To channel information and act as interface between cultural policy makers and artists, advocating policies favourable to creativity and artistic innovation at the appropriate ASEM level

3. To nurture artistic creativity and facilitate encounters among young people for future artistic cooperation and career opportunities

4. To support the Asia-Europe dimension in international festivals and cultural events (like www.culture-asef.org and the up-coming Portal Culture360)

Exhibitions Abroad Support Program: support to exhibitions introducing Japanese art and culture abroad.

Exhibitions in Japan Support Program: introduce foreign art and culture that are planned and executed by Japanese museums and organizations, and shown in Japan.

Performing Arts:
Performances Abroad Support Program: outstanding Japanese performing art (drama, music, dance, ethnic performing arts) groups who present performing arts overseas.
Public: groups or organization.

Invitational Performances in Japan Support Program: for domestic groups that receive performing art groups who will perform in Japan.
Geographic focus: groups from ODA-recipient nations and the countries of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.

Performing Arts Japan ("PAJ"): introduction of outstanding Japanese stage performances in the United States.
Public: non-profit organizations.

Publication and Audio-Visual Exchange:
Film Festivals in Japan Support Program: support to international film festivals, exhibitions, and activities in Japan introducing foreign movies, video works, TV programs, and other moving pictures.
Public: groups, organizing committees.

Film and TV Program Production Support Program: for the production of films, TV programs, and other audio-visual materials that serve to further an understanding of Japan and Japanese culture abroad.
Public: Organizations with knowledge and proven experience in the field of film-making.

The Prince Claus Fund stimulates and supports activities in the field of culture and development

Mission: to provide financial, promotional and professional assistance to media makers and to encourage the production, distribution and exhibition of independent media in all forms.

Three distinct components, each awarded annually:

The Film and Video Fellowships support media artists in the U.S. working in the broad categories of Documentary, Narrative, Experimental or Video Installation. Each of the 14 Film and Video Fellows is awarded $35,000.

The New Media Fellowships support media artists in the U.S. whose work centers around interactive, dynamic media, including, but not limited to, such computer-mediated forms as web art, robotics, virtual reality, biotechnology, interactive installations and software art. Each of the 6 New Media Fellows is awarded $35,000.

The Media Arts Fellowships in Mexico support Mexican media artists working in Documentary, Narrative, Experimental, Video Installation or New Media. Each of the 6 Media Arts Fellows in Mexico is awarded $20,000.

In addition to providing Fellowships, the Program promotes the artists and their projects maintaining this website and publishing books and newsletters profiling the Fellows and their projects, providing expertise, advice and resources.

Public: Artists may be at any stage of career development, from emerging makers to those well-established in their careers.

The Multi-Arts Production Fund

Mission: to encourage creative approaches to new work in the performing arts, to foster work in the performing arts that explores the dynamics of contemporary culture and to support a diversity of artists and arts organizations.
The MAP Fund is an annual program.

Procedures : In 2004, the MAP Fund will provide $1 million in grants ranging from approximately $15,000 to $50,000. Funds will support up to 40 projects by US-based non for profit organizations undertaking the commissioning, development and/or production of new work in theater, music composition, dance, puppetry, opera and interdisciplinary performance.
Proposed projects must be for a new work that has not been previously produced, except in developmental workshops..
The deadline for applications is March 27, 2004.

Special Program: Bellagio

The Bellagio Study and Conference Center, located on Lake Como, Italy, provides a calm environment for creation in which scholars, scientists, artists, writers, policymakers and practitioners from all over the world may pursue their creative and scholarly work.

From February to mid-December, the Center offers one-month stays for 15 residents at a time in any discipline or field and coming from any country who expect a publication, exhibition, performance or other concrete product to result.
The Foundation provides room and board without charge for all residents and workshop/team participants. Some travel assistance is available for those from developing countries who qualify.

Procedures :

First of all, send a brief letter of inquiry addressed to the director of the subject area of interest (through postage or e-mail).
The letter can be sent throughout the year and should describe: issues the proposed project would address; information about the organization's experience in the field; estimated budget for and expected duration of the project; and qualification of key personnel involved in the project. Please do not send attachments.
