Description

Lijiang Studio is a new residence program located in a small village near the town of Lijiang in the mountains of southwest China. The project was initiated by Mu Yuming, an artist from Lijiang, and Jay Brown, an arts administrator from the United States, as a residency that could benefit local people as much as visiting artists. Lijiang Studio invites artists for 4-6 month residencies, although stays vary. Collaboration with local people is facilitated and emphasized. Lijiang Studio does not currently provide grants to non-Chinese artists, although it does cover room and board. Please see the website for more information.

Infrastructures / Facilities

Lijiang Studio maintains several apartments in Kunming, the provincial capital, and a small office/presentation space. In Lijiang, we maintain one live/work space in the historic old town, which can accomodate about 6 people.

We are building/renovating our main spaces in a village 20 kilometers from Lijiang, this space will provide studio and living space for 6-10 people..

Social and artistic disciplines

Lijiang Studio is open to working with artists, craftsmen, researchers, etc from any discipline, although we do not have extensive facilities and equipment. Visual artists tend to be involved in the studio. We do have Apple and PC stations with software for web and print design, video editing and post-production.

Lijiang Studio regularly hosts small, informal presentations by artists or others, followed by discussions and dinner. Workshops and exhibitions can be arranged locally and regionally according to the interests and activites of participating artists.

Financial support

Primarily US foundations and private donors.
