Call for application/16th Session 2006-2007/ Ecole du Magasin/ Grenoble, France

The International Curatorial Training Program L’Ecole du Magasin

L’Ecole du Magasin, first curatorial training program in Europe, is part of an international network, that raises Independent study University Programs and schools based in contemporary art venues. L’Ecole du Magasin is the only one in France to be based in a contemporary art centre which produces its own exhibitions and events. This practicing environment provides daily opportunities for immediate observation and application of the contents of the program.

Organisation of the studies
Participants work independently on a group project, with the support of a project tutor. They take responsability for all aspects of its production (selection of artists works, budgeting, transport, insurance, loan procedures, editing, publication rights...) and decide together for the final form of the curatorial project : an exhibition, a book, an event, a symposium, a website, etc...

Program
The 10-month-course is structured into three successive phases to make participants conversant with the tools needed to organize and realize their collective project, and as it proceeds, places increasing emphasis on independent studies.
From September to December, the main emphasis is on the theoretical and technical tools of exhibition-making, articulated around seminars on the history of exhibitions, art history after the 60’s, the design and architecture of exhibitions, media theories, and independent or collective curatorship.
From January to March, independent study comes to the fore. This period is devoted to research and meetings designed to lead to the conception of the curatorial project to be prepared and presented between April to July.
Participants also have to edit a web site that accompanies the training session and communicate about their project. This web site to be on line at the end of the trimester states as the first curatorial project handled by the group of participants.
Study trips in France and abroad are included in the training course in order to encounter other artistic scenes and cultural contexts, institutions and professionals.
Teaching staff
Theorists and practitioners (artists, curators, critics, historians, editors and publishers) coming from very different backgrounds teach on a regular basis or for shorter seminars, depending on the participants needs or interests and the project in preparation.

Application
Candidates will have a university degree (in art, art history, philosophy,...) Or a significant professional experience in contemporary art and the capacity to follow an advanced course.

A call for project is released on March and can be downloaded from the website. After a first selection, the short-listed applicants are interviewed at Grenoble. For non-european candidates, special conditions can be organized for the interview.
